Tasting note:
A dark red color with deep garnet highlights. Elegant nose of berry fruit, creamy notes of fresh toast and mocha add complexity. Intense and complex. Powerful and elegant on the palate with a lovely, long finish of red and black fruit complimented by notes of roasted coffee. Well structured, well balanced with a good length.
Additional information:
Cru la Maqueline covers 70 hectares in Macau, on the banks of the Gironde estuary.
The use of the term ‘Cru’ is unusual as it can be used to denote both the estate and the wine it produces. In 2006, when Philippe Castel acquired the property, which dates back to 1892, he decided against a name change. Cru la Maqueline, with its distinctive ranch-style architecture, is also home to the elaborate stables which house the family’s collection of competitive reining horses. The wine produced here is as unique as the property itself, with a majority Merlot blend.
Critic tasting note: (2022 vintage) “The wine has a spicy as well as blackberry crumble aroma. It is full of fruit with light tannins to balance the wine’s berry flavors. Drink from 2025.” – 88/100, Wine Enthusiast
